Happy Holidays, [info]belladonnalin!

Title: Can't Turn Left On Tuesdays
Rating: R - NC-17
Characters: Jon/Spencer, Panic! At The Disco
Word Count: 16,540.
Warnings: None.
Disclaimer: Lies, falsehoods, glorious fantasy.
Summary: "I've made out with guys a few times," Jon says meditatively. He shrugs and takes a sip of beer, utterly casual, like he's saying that he's played a few games of hockey, or played a little guitar in his time.

Notes: Thanks to A, A, and P for betaing. Belladonnalin said in her prompt that she liked laughing and frottage, so I started with that and ended up with *plot*. I hope that's okay. Happy holidays!

I'm stuck trying to figure out how I can possibly start this comment, because I know that I'll never be able to articulate the awe I'm feeling right now in the way that this story deserves. This was seriously just flawless.

Spencer's characterization. I-- WOW. You did such an amazing job of showing how he's young and scared and clinging to control like that's going to make things easier for him. Jon was so incredibly lovable in this. His patience, the way he's got a lot to lose, but he's going to take what he can get anyway. The two year ago difference between them is so well illustrated. How Jon's maybe been, if not exactly where Spencer is, at least he's been *somewhere* before. This isn't new to him in the same way.

Brendon and Ryan in the background were perfect. I felt like I was living in this whole world with them, and it was *so* good. I know this is a story I'm going to reread until the end of time.

The build between Jon and Spencer killed me dead. Jon reaching out to Spencer after their first hook up, the way that Spencer turned in on himself completely afterwards (though was still never a dislikable character! I could always feel for him, always empathize).

I'm refraining from quoting lines back at you because, seriously, *gestures*, all of that was so fucking good. I loved the ending, loved how this was just about that tour, and how the experimentation probably created more questions for Spencer than it answered.

I'm so giddy and happy right now because this is my very most favorite kind of story (that sexual exploration/tension) and the writing as SO GOOD and the characters were so vivid and so real, and I'm not sure how much coherency I'm achieving right now, but. Man.

Wow.

This was the loveliest comment in the whole world to get, darling; thank you for it, and thank you for the rec, too. I can't tell you how much this comment made me smile and go pink and get all embarrassed, because I value your opinion so much. ♥

Absolutely, perfectly wonderful. I have no words. The characterization is amazing, the pacing is flawless, and it's subtly, smolderingly hot. I love every single word.

This was amazing. It is absolutely one of the best stories I have read in this fandom, and I can't wait to read it again and again.

You created a group of characters that were believable as friends and bandmates- I loved the way you used Brendon and Ryan. In some ways, I think getting background characters pitch perfect is harder than doing so for main characters, but you completely sold me on them. They felt fully-formed and realistic and it never felt like they were there as cameos. Their inclusion was necessary to the story in the best possible way. (And, uh, in my head they were doing some experimentation of their own on the tour. ♥_♥)

I also loved the way you used the tour. There was this entire world of new places and venues and shows just peeking through the action of the story, and it made a great backdrop to the story. I honestly cannot say enough about how much I loved this- it's the story about Spencer I have always been waiting and wanting to read. Absolutely wonderful.

I am such a sucker for slow-build stories, and this ranks right up there with my favorites. Spencer, in this, was just magnificent, and I loved Jon so much, and the pacing of their ever-deepening relationship was wonderful. I loved this so much.

This is SO great. I really enjoyed reading this, straight through, even though it ends on that tenuous note. The exploratory feeling - the combination of anxiety and desire - is the best part for me.

December 11 2007, 03:52:14 UTC 4 years ago

Oh God! I'm dying here... I know it's long long but it feels so much like it's all just starting for them. The awkwardness at the total perfection of these boys together. Damn, I wish I knew if Ryan and Brendon even have a clue what's going on and to be there with them that first time would be amazing.

and for the record, I thought my heart was going to break there when Spencer wouldn't hug Jon. I may have even let a tear slip out.

This was amazing. I loved the characterization, and the development of Spencer and Jon's relationship, and how you wove that in with regular fun (and not so fun) moments with the rest of the band. And... just... wow. So good.

This is the end? Please we need more! We need Jon missing Spencer and Spencer wanting Jon...

[info]jocondite

January 11 2008, 05:43:16 UTC 4 years ago

It is, I'm sorry! *g* I kind of felt that it had to end there, on the threshold of possibility; and there;s no way there will be an unhappy ending, whether they ever hook up again or not, because they're friends.

[info]eloquentice

December 11 2007, 06:15:35 UTC 4 years ago

My breath actually hitched when I reached the end. I was so completely immersed, swept away, all that.

The characterization here is incredible, on all fronts. You put the reader in a world - every single character feels developed, full, real (on that note, I absolutely fucking LOVED how you wrote Amanda, and her and Ryan's connection).

Sometimes when I read things, I can sense that I am clearly following a timeline, moving from plot point to plot point, and there is a clear place I need to get to. With this, it felt more like I was simply moving with the characters as they lived their life - a life that happened to be full of (nicely understated) plot. And I absolutely love that feeling. And it made Spencer and Jon's slow, slow build that much richer, and that much more satisfying.

I just... this is wonderful, and I know it's something I'll be rereading.

and settles in the end for neither
OH. OH OH OH OH OH.

Oh my GOD, this is the best holiday gift EVER. This is fucking PERFECT, with the complicated and the difficult and the negotiation of difficulties and oh. MY GOD.

I seriously don't have fucking WORDS for this, it is so amazing.

Spencer looks at the ground; if he knew the answer, he'd give it, but -
oh. This is Spencer. THIS, RIGHT HERE, this is Spencer.

GOD, this is so very amazing.

Excellent story. I love your Spencer, how young and uncertain he is, and how hard he tries to hide it. The uncertainty at the ending really worked for me also. I wish I could be more coherent about this, but seriously, it's one of the best things I've read in this fandom.

This is so amazing. The slow build, and the characterization, and the way you show the romance within the context of their lives and such a lush background - amazing. And I love the way you capture both the humor and joy of their lives and also the weariness and uncertainty of it. I'm torn on the ending - there's a part of me that likes that it doesn't end with easy answers, and there's a part of me that longs for sunshine and rainbows.

Really, really well done.

Yeah, what they said. What they all said. This story is perfection. PERFECTION. I love where you ended it, complete with my breathy sigh. But also, ALSO, I can't help wanting to know what happens next. I was living in this world with them for a little while. Living there and seeing their lives. So real. So WOW.

I read this in bed and literally fell asleep with my heart in my throat. This story...I don't even know what to say. It's so easy and yet so not at all, you really brought a whole new standard to characterization, and I hate how much I love hating that I love the fact that I hate even though I love where you ended it. (THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I MEAN TO SAY, YES.)

This fic is amazing. I've been trying all day to come up with feedback other than "this fic is so perfect it makes me never want to write again" because, ummm, that sounds weird. But there it is. (And it's totally a compliment, I swear). Your characterizations are incredibly vivid; I loved your attention to detail and the ending? Just, of course. Of course that's where it had to end. This is wonderful.

I read this last night and I really am not sure I can give coherent feedback even now, because this fic is just so damn awesome. So awesome I really want it to be the way it actually happened because in my head now it is totally canon.

I could go on and on about what I liked but I'd just be quoting the whole fic because of it's brilliance. The one thing I particularly adored though was the way you dealt with Spencer being all new to the sex stuff and his anxiety and awkwardness and the way Jon was so patient and willing to just wait. Just so real and perfectly done.

Also I am a sucker for uncertain endings so I think this stopped in just the right place so the possibilities of the future for them are endless.

Brendon's back in time for soundcheck. "They used me cruelly," he says, pressing his shaking hands against his eyes. "They played Neutral Milk Hotel at me. Then the poetry - oh my god, the poetry. There was John Donne. There was Dylan Thomas. There was - there was iambic pentameter. Nothing sounds right anymore without it. I need the rhythm, I need the metaphor, I need -"

"The world is truly a vale of tears," Ryan says, rolling his eyes, and Brendon brightens.

"Yeah, Ryan Ross," he says. "Just like that. Talk flowery to me."

"Wow, I actually didn't think this bus could get any more ridiculous," Spencer says, as Ryan starts to read from The Picture of Dorian Gray, with Brendon curled up against his side, whimpering. "I mean."

"There could be llamas," Jon says, shrugging. "I figure as long as there are no llamas, we're good."

This is the best paragraph in the history of ever. Just sayin'.

Wow. Just. Wow.

Well, first off I want to bite into that awesomeness that went on the background - meaning, Ryan and Brendon. That is exactly hoe I'd imagine their friendship to be, so... just, so AWESOME. Like all the mocking-each-other and wrestling matches and EVERYTHING. Best two side-characters ever. <3

Then, side-characters, um, aside, and on with Jon and Spencer. I mean, wow. Holy shit. I can't even comprehend. Jon - awesomeness. Jon was too awesome. Not perfect, no, perfect is boring, but just awesome. And Spencer with all his insecurities and hesitance... and. Everything.

Awesome, I think I over-used that word for good now. Sorry for that. But my head's kinda blank now, can't produce anything else. :D

Thank you for this. <3

[info]jocondite

January 11 2008, 06:01:57 UTC 4 years ago

Thank you! I'm really gald you liked it, especially the side characters - I don't think you can write Panic! without including everyone, no matter the pairing, but I didn't want to caricature them. :) This wasa great comment, thank you.

December 12 2007, 13:22:22 UTC 4 years ago

This? Is really amazing. I love the hanging question at the end. I think fic writers try so hard to wrap everything up in a bow, both for our own sanity and because we think readers want an ending, but things don't always work that way. This is so much better for the open-endedness.

Your Spencer and Jon are wonderful and real, and I adored all the background people. Brendon and Ryan weren't the focus but that didn't matter because they were fully realized, and The Hush Sound and Amanda Palmer were fucking awesome too.

Fantastic job, anonymous.
